▸ About smart in Thailand

Compiled from the Thai distributor's own site, launch press and government records. Every claim carries a source, and anything we could not verify is marked [unverified] rather than guessed · ~23 min read

At a glance

smart began as a Mercedes-Benz city-car brand (fortwo). Geely has co-owned it with Daimler, now Mercedes-Benz Group, 50:50 since March 2019 (Autolifethailand, 2026-09-26). Mercedes-Benz's global design team styles the cars; Geely is responsible for engineering, platform and production (th.smart.com — partnership release, Headlightmag — #5). The #-series EVs were already sold in right-hand-drive Australia and Malaysia before Thailand, and Autolifethailand previewed the Thai cars from the Malaysian RHD specs before launch (Autolifethailand, 2026-09-26). Autolifethailand positions the brand as a lifestyle alternative to MINI, also aimed at the small premium EVs from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo and Audi (same source).

Thai spelling. Thai press writes the brand in Latin script ("smart #1"); where it is transliterated it is สมาร์ท — "smart (สมาร์ท)" (Thaipost, 2026-10-05). Headlightmag spells the model names out as สมาร์ท แฮชแท็ก วัน (#1), สมาร์ท แฮชแท็ก ทรี (#3) and สมาร์ท แฮชแท็ก ไฟว์ (#5) (#1, #3, #5).

Distribution & business

Earlier plan (2022). In January 2022 Proton Holdings signed a memorandum with smart Automobile to distribute smart EVs in Malaysia and Thailand (carz.com.my, 2022-01). Malaysia launched under Proton's Pro-Net; Thailand never did. A Thai entry was reported again in 2023, but Geely sent Zeekr and Geely into Thailand first (Autolifethailand, 2026-09-26).

Thonburi Group (2026). Autolifethailand first reported on 2026-09-18 that Thonburi Group had won the smart rights (Autolifethailand, 2026-09-18). The official announcement came on 2026-10-05: Thonburi Group was appointed importer and distributor, and its subsidiary Thonburi Stardust Co., Ltd. runs the brand (th.smart.com — partnership release, Thaipost). Thonburi Group has "more than 85 years" in Thai automotive per the launch release (th.smart.com — launch release) and "more than 86 years" per the partnership release (th.smart.com — partnership release). with either figure, so no founding year is used here [unverified]. The group already distributes Geely and is a Benz Thonburi Mercedes-Benz dealer (Autolifethailand, 2026-09-26); Viriyaphant** speaks for the group; smart's global CMO Kang Yi for the brand (th.smart.com — launch release).

Launch. The brand launched on 2026-10-20 under the theme "Open Your Mind" (Thaipost), with a launch event at Dib26, Sukhumvit Soi 26 (#legend, 2026-10-26). smart has a 400 m² stand at the 43rd Motor Expo, 2–13 December 2026 (Autolifethailand — Motor Expo 2026 booth plan, 2026-11-02); the booth number B01 comes only from #legend [unverified — booth number from one secondary source].

Distributor office: Thonburi Stardust Co., Ltd., 84/1 Viriyahbhun Building, 2nd floor, Charansanitwong Road, Bang Phlat, Bangkok 10700. Roadside and call centre 02-473-8859 (th.smart.com — contact).

Volume targets and investment: not published [unverified].

Local assembly: none announced — all three models are CBU from China (see At a glance). paultan.org reported in 2023 that RHD #1 and #3 come from Geely's Xi'an plant (paultan.org, 2023-10-31 — returned HTTP 403 on re-check 2026-11-03, not re-read); the Thai cars' plant is not named by any Thai source [unverified].

Range discrepancy on the official page. The #5 page's marketing bullet says "Extended range of up to 540 kilometer", but its spec table says 590 km WLTP, and Headlightmag, Autolifethailand and Thairath all print 590 km (th.smart.com — #5). The same page's battery section repeats "540 km — WLTP maximum comprehensive cruising range". 540 km is believed to be the global figure for the dual-motor #5 versions [unverified — no Thai source says so]; the Thai Premium is the single-motor RWD (267 kW) car, and the spec table and all three Thai articles agree on 590 km, so 590 km is The same page also quotes CLTC and AWD copy from the global site ("CLTC comprehensive battery life", "two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive switch") that does not apply to the Thai RWD Premium.
