MG (Morris Garages) in Thailand

Canonical research doc. Source-of-truth for every MG fact used by seed scripts, the brand page, and the AI advisor. Cite every claim inline. Mark [unverified] rather than guess. Update researched_at whenever the doc changes.

Range-standard hygiene (LOAD-BEARING). SAIC/MG Thai materials publish NEDC figures by default — these inflate WLTP by ~15-25 %. The DB column is range_wltp_km. Never write an NEDC figure into range_wltp_km. Use range_nedc_km in trim_facts.extra_specs for the published TH figure, and derive a WLTP estimate (multiply NEDC by ~0.80) or pull from EU/UK sources where the model is also sold (Carwow, EV-Database). The IM5 in our current DB has range_wltp_km = 860 — this is wrong (860 is NEDC; WLTP ≈ 710 per UK Carwow). Fix on re-seed.

  • Showrooms: ~170+ nationwide (MG dealer locator); exact May-2026 count [unverified].
  • Current price band: ฿469,000 (EP Plus deep clearance) / ฿579,900 (MG4 D Standard Range) – ฿2,499,000 (Cyberster Performance AWD).
  • Local plant: WHA / Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 2 — Chonburi province (NOT Rayong; the two are adjacent and often conflated in secondary sources). 200,000 units / year peak capacity.

MG in Thailand is, in practice, a SAIC-CP enterprise: the manufacturing joint venture (SAIC Motor-CP Co., Ltd.) builds vehicles at the Chonburi plant; the sales arm (MG Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd.) operates the consumer-facing brand at mgcars.com. Both are jointly owned by SAIC (51 %) and CP Group (49 %) — making MG the only mass-market BEV brand in Thailand with significant local production, on a deeply localized supply chain. That production footprint, plus the MG Lifetime Battery Warranty (announced 2024-07-09, the first of its kind in the country), is the core of MG's Thai-market differentiation against BYD's import-then-localize playbook.

As of January 2026, MG ranked #2 BEV brand in Thailand at +292.9 % YoY growth (Benchmark Source), behind only BYD. 2025 total volume was 35,872 units (combined domestic + export, +44 % YoY per MarkLines), and MG completed 100 % of its EV 3.0 production-compensation obligation in 2025.

Distribution & business

Two legal entities, one operation:

  • SAIC Motor-CP Co., Ltd. — the manufacturing JV, founded 2013 (SAIC 51 % / CP 49 %). Builds MG vehicles in Thailand for domestic sale and ASEAN export. (SAIC and CP form Thai JV — chinadaily.com.cn 2012-12-10)
  • MG Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd. — the distribution arm, responsible for sales, marketing, dealer network, and after-sales.

The first Thai-assembled MG6 rolled off the Chonburi line in June 2014 and went on sale 2014-08-01. (Bangkok Post — Thai-built MG6)

Local plant — WHA / Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 2, Chonburi

The MG plant is at Hemaraj (now WHA) Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 2 in Chonburi provincenot Rayong, despite secondary sources occasionally conflating the two (the Eastern Seaboard industrial corridor spans both provinces).

  • 2014: First plant opened — 30 rai, ~50,000 units/year, ฿9B investment. (Bangkok Post — MG Chon Buri plant opens)
  • 2017: Second, larger plant inaugurated — 437.5 rai (70 ha) at the same Hemaraj ESIE 2 site, ฿10B investment, scaling to 200,000 units/year peak capacity. (WHA — Inauguration of New SAIC Motor-CP MG Production Plant)
  • Designated SAIC's ASEAN regional manufacturing hub.
  • BEVs built locally as of May 2026: MG4 (CKD since Nov 2023), MGS5 EV (CKD since Mar 2025), ZS EV. Cyberster, IM5, IM6, Maxus 7, Maxus 9 are CBU-China.

MG ZS EV — compact electric SUV (the BEV ancestor)

The single most important historical BEV in Thailand. Launched 2019-06-21 as the country's first mainstream affordable BEV at ฿1,190,000, the ZS EV has traversed two generations (Gen 1 CBU 2019-2021; Gen 1.5 facelift 2022-now), six discrete pricing eras, a battery-platform swap (44.5 kWh likely-NMC → 50.3 kWh LFP), and seven years of continuous sale. Most price-history data points of any MG model. NOT covered by the 2024-07-09 MG Lifetime Battery Warranty.

Lineage & platform

  • Generation: Gen 1 (CBU 2019-2021) + Gen 1.5 facelift (2022-current)
  • Platform: Conventional SAIC MG ICE-derived platform (NOT the MSP)
  • Architecture: 400 V
  • Origin: CBU-China throughout (no CKD)
  • Lifetime warranty: ✗ (standard 8 yr / 180,000 km only)
  • CRITICAL note: Paultan's 2022-01-19 article speculated TH would get the 72.6 kWh "Long Range" ZS EV. It did not. Thailand received only the 50.3 kWh variant in the 2022 facelift. The 72.6 kWh variant is UK/EU-only.

MG ES — electric station wagon (the EP Minorchange / facelift)

MG ES is technically the MG EP Minorchange/facelift, rebranded as a new model line for Thailand. Confirmed by Autolifethailand and Paultan. Globally the same vehicle is the "MG 5 Electric Wagon". NOT covered by the 2024-07-09 Lifetime Battery Warranty (excluded alongside ZS EV and EP). Single trim throughout TH life.

Range conflict — RESOLVED

Sources cite both 412 km and 320 km. Resolution:

  • 412 km is NEDC (MG official launch material, post-LFP-pack rated figure)
  • 320 km is WLTP (Autolifethailand pre-launch booking article: "320 km WLTP / 380 km NEDC")

Per CLAUDE.md range-standard hygiene: write 412 km NEDC to trim_facts.extra_specs.range_nedc_km and ~330 km WLTP (derived 412 × 0.80 = 329.6) to range_wltp_km.

Lineage & platform

  • Generation: Launched 2023-03-21 at BIMS 2023; deliveries from April 2023
  • Platform: SAIC mid-range platform (Roewe Ei5 lineage) — chassis-shared with EP/EP Plus, on a newer-spec implementation
  • Architecture: 400 V
  • Origin: CBU-China
  • Predecessor (chassis-level): MG EP Plus (ep-plus) — ES adds 8-Layer Hair Pin motor tech, LFP battery (vs likely-NCM on EP), 87 kW DC charging (vs 50), ADAS L2 suite, 360° cam, 6 airbags, 17″ wheels (vs 16)
  • Lifetime warranty: ✗ (excluded — Autolifethailand warranty announcement)

MG Maxus 9 — large 7-seat e-MPV (incl. PLUS, V+ Minorchange 2026)

The flagship electric MPV. CRITICAL model-relationship resolution: "Maxus 9 PLUS" is a stripped lower-priced TRIM, NOT a separate model and NOT a long-wheelbase extension. All Maxus 9 variants (PLUS, X, V, V+) share identical mechanical hardware: 90 kWh CTP battery, 180 kW motor, FWD, 540 km NEDC, 5,270 × 2,000 × 1,840 mm, 3,200 mm wheelbase. Only equipment differs. Recommendation: fold the current standalone maxus-9-plus model row into maxus-9 as a trim.

MG IM5 — premium electric sedan ("IM by MG" sub-brand)

SAIC's premium EV sub-brand, 875 V architecture. Internationally marketed as "IM Presented by MG Motor" / "MG IM5" (the awkward phrase was widely mocked at launch — Carscoops calls it "the most ridiculous car brand name yet"). In China this is IM L6 (智己L6 / Zhìjǐ L6)not IM L7 (the L7 is the larger executive sedan that never reached RHD markets). The Thai IM5 is the rebadged IM L6. (Wikipedia — IM L6, "Also called MG IM5 (export)")

The IM brand (智己汽车 / "Zhìjǐ Qìchē") is a JV of SAIC Motor (54 %), Alibaba Group (18 %), and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech (18 %), founded 2020-12 (Wikipedia — IM Motors). "IM" derives from "Intelligence in Motion". The brand was conceived as a CATL/Qualcomm-pillared, software-first competitor to Nio and Li Auto in the ~RMB 300k–500k Chinese segment, then re-pointed at export markets in 2025 under the "MG Premium" sub-brand strategy.

Lineage & platform

  • China model: IM L6 (智己L6) — debuted at Geneva Motor Show 2024-02; Chinese on-sale date 2024-05-13 (Wikipedia)
  • Global rebrand: IM5 — UK on-sale 2025-07 (Electrive)
  • TH model: MG IM5 — single trim (Premium Long Range RWD); on sale from BIMS 2026, 2026-03-24 (Autolifethailand)
  • Platform: SAIC IM platform — same architecture as IM6 (IM LS6) and IM L7. Battery + motor + 800V SiC inverter from CATL/IM joint development.
  • Architecture: 875 V peak (nominal ~751 V, marketed as "800 V" or "875 V" depending on document) — the highest-voltage architecture in any TH-market BEV as of May 2026, alongside IM6 Long Range / Performance and the Zeekr 7X. Higher voltage = higher peak DC charging at the same current limit, which is how IM advertises 396 kW DC peak / 10–80 % in <18 min.
  • Origin: CBU-China only. Built at IM's Lingang plant outside Shanghai. Not on Chonburi line.

WLTP vs NEDC resolution — load-bearing

Thai press uniformly publishes the 860 km NEDC figure (Headlightmag, Autolifethailand, Thairath, Iphonemod all cite this). NEDC over-states real-world range by 25–35 %. Multiple primary UK sources confirm the WLTP figure for the same SKU (100 kWh, 300 kW RWD):

Source WLTP range Notes
Carwow 441 mi (709 km) UK review, manufacturer spec; "the official range is 441 miles, making the IM5 one of the longest-range EVs on sale"
EV-Database UK 441 mi (709 km) Editorial database, manufacturer-sourced
Stable Vehicle Contracts 441 mi Confirms
EV-Database real-world estimate ~325 mi / 520 km Editorial real-world figure

Recommended DB value for range_wltp_km: 710 (round trip from 441 mi × 1.609344). High confidence — three independent UK sources agree exactly on 441 mi. The current DB row of range_wltp_km = 860 is wrong (the loader has been writing the NEDC figure into the WLTP column). Fix at next re-seed.

MG IM6 — premium electric SUV ("IM by MG")

The SUV counterpart to IM5 — same IM platform, same Lingang factory, same SiC inverters. In China this is IM LS6 (智己LS6) — a coupe-SUV that competes with the Tesla Model Y and Xpeng G6 segment.

Same JV story as IM5 (SAIC 54 % / Alibaba 18 % / Zhangjiang Hi-Tech 18 %). Bigger volume seller than IM5 in TH — the IM6 was first to market (March 2025) and has the lower entry price (฿1.35M vs IM5's ฿1.50M), so the IM6 set the "MG goes premium" narrative.

Lineage & platform

  • China model: IM LS6 — launched 2023-10 (Wikipedia — IM LS6)
  • Platform: SAIC IM platform — same as IM5 / IM L6 / IM L7; marketed in TH as "800 V Dual SiC Platform"
  • Architecture (trim-dependent):
    • Premium RWD: 400 V LFP
    • Long Range RWD + Performance AWD: 875 V NMC
  • Origin: CBU-China (Lingang plant). Not assembled in Chonburi.
  • Export sequence (per Wikipedia): TH 2025-03-24 → AU 2025-06-12 → NZ 2025-08-22 → SG 2025-09-25 → UK 2025-09 (deliveries)

Naming / launch date clarification — two correct dates

The IM6 has two valid launch dates widely cited:

  • 2025-03-18 — date of the official press announcement with pricing (Motorist, Autolifethailand, MarkLines all cite this)
  • 2025-03-24 — date of the on-sale start at BIMS 2025 (Wikipedia IM LS6 export table, CnEVPost)

This research doc treats 2025-03-18 as the canonical "launch_date" for events / price-history seeding (the announcement is the actionable event for price intelligence; the BIMS reveal is a marketing event 6 days later).

Performance power discrepancy note

Thai press uniformly cites 778 hp (580 kW) for combined motor output; UK/EU sources (EVKX, EV-Database, Carwow) uniformly cite 752 hp (553 kW). Both refer to the same dual-motor SKU. The discrepancy likely reflects different measurement standards — TH spec quotes Chinese-market peak (peak-of-peak / 10-second burst) while EU spec quotes WLTP-protocol continuous-peak. For DB purposes, store the TH figure (580 kW / 778 hp) as motor_power_kw since that's what the Thai customer is shown at the dealer; surface the EU figure as [note] if needed.

Open research items (May 2026)

Items currently [unverified] or partially resolved — to close on the next research pass:

  1. Exact May 2026 dealer / service-center count. Need to enumerate mgcars.com/en/dealer programmatically.
  2. Color hex codes for every model. Need brand-asset extraction (sample swatch images from mgcars.com like we did for Zeekr).
  3. Lifetime Battery Warranty for IM5 / IM6 — eligible or not? Not surfaced in this research pass. Recheck mgcars.com/en/mg-lifetime-warranty T&Cs once IM5 has been on sale long enough to settle.
  4. Pantip thread URLs — MG4 long-term ownership, IM5 launch reactions, ZS EV vs S5 EV vs Atto 3 comparison threads.
  5. DLT registration data per brand 2023-2025. Pull from monthly_registrations table once joined.
  6. IM6 Long Range RWD complete spec sheet — new trim added 2026-04-22; full WLTP / NEDC published numbers needed.
  7. MG ES range figure conflict — sources cite both 412 km and 320 km; need Headlightmag long-test for definitive WLTP.
  8. PEA VOLTA / EleX / Chargenet roaming — extent of MG i-SMART app integration not documented in materials reviewed.
  9. MG4 D Standard Range MSRP confirmation — Paultan article cites ฿579,900 for MY2026 D Standard Range, but mgcars.com homepage shows ฿669,900 as starting price (may cover MY2024 inventory still on the lot). Confirm via showroom visit or dealer call.

Known DB drift / cleanup actions

Run pnpm db:nuke-brand --brand mg --apply then re-seed via pnpm db:seed-mg && pnpm db:reconcile. Below is the full list of known divergences between current DB state (per db/audit-mg.ts) and this doc, organized by action type.

Model-level cleanup (before re-seed)

  1. Merge 4-electric model into mg4. They're the same nameplate; 4-electric is the Zigwheels-aggregator slug.
  2. Fold maxus-9-plus model into maxus-9 as a trim (plus). All Maxus 9 variants (X, V, PLUS, V+) share identical mechanical hardware (90 kWh CTP / 180 kW / FWD / 540 km NEDC); only equipment differs. PLUS is NOT a long-wheelbase extension.
  3. Add maxus-7 as new model — not in current DB. Body mpv, single trim model-x, predecessor: none.
  4. Verify es model exists — if missing, add with predecessor ep (chassis-level — ES is the EP Minorchange).
  5. Drop all slug='starting' placeholder trims — checkraka / Zigwheels aggregator artifacts (audit-mg shows these on mg4, im5, maxus-9, s5-ev, zs-ev, etc.).
  6. Drop mg5 model if present and tagged as BEV — MG5 in TH is the petrol sedan only; European MG 5 EV (Roewe Ei5) was never offered here.

  • performance-awd (current; 2025-03-18)

Total: 38 trims across 10 BEV models (including discontinued trims with predecessor chains).

Range / WLTP fixes (critical)

  1. Fix IM5 range_wltp_km: currently 860 in DB (which is the NEDC figure). True WLTP = 710 km per 3 independent UK sources (Carwow, EV-Database, Stable Vehicle Contracts). Per CLAUDE.md range-standard hygiene: write 710 to range_wltp_km and store NEDC 860 in trim_facts.extra_specs.range_nedc_km.
  2. Apply same NEDC→WLTP correction to ALL MG trims. TH press uniformly publishes NEDC. For each trim, derive WLTP as NEDC × 0.80 when no EU/UK source exists (or use EU/UK source when available — IM6 Long Range 624 km WLTP and Performance 504 km WLTP confirmed by EV-Database).
  3. MG ES range conflict: 412 km NEDC + ~330 km WLTP (derived). Resolved — see ES section.

Equipment / spec fields

  1. Populate per-trim equipment JSONB from the equipment lists in this doc (standard kit + trim-exclusive deltas).
  2. Populate per-trim key_changes_md with what changed vs the predecessor trim (battery chemistry switch, motor uprate, screen size change, etc.).
  3. Populate per-trim extra_specs with NEDC range, motor torque, drag coefficient, wheelbase, ground clearance, frunk/trunk, etc.

Price-history

  1. Populate price_history table with every documented MSRP change in this doc — 60+ data points across all models. Source: use the article URL as verified_source_url. Tag promotional prices with price_type='promo' and permanent list changes as price_type='msrp'. Examples to seed:
    • MG4: 12 documented changes
    • MGS5 EV: 6 documented changes
    • ZS EV: 8 documented changes
    • EP / EP Plus: 6 documented changes
    • ES: 4 documented changes
    • Cyberster: 2 documented changes (launch + present)
    • Maxus 7: 5 documented changes
    • Maxus 9: 9 documented changes
    • IM5: 3 documented changes
    • IM6: 11 documented changes (per Agent 4's research)

Events seed (db/seed/events.json)

  1. Add ~50 events to events.json from the Cross-model lineup history table above. Event types: launch, facelift, trim_update, price_change, promo_window, special_edition, booking_pause, subsidy_change, recall, delivery_milestone, brand_event.

Brand-level external_links

  1. Brand external_links: add

Lifetime Battery Warranty flag
